How Much Do You Charge? Are You a Quality or Quantity Person?

What would you say when your client asks, "How much do you charge for your service?"

This is a money question. Indeed such money question forces you to confront your sense of self-worth. In other words, what's your self-worth?

It takes courage to place a fair but generous value on your expertise and the time taken to get that expertise. Definitely not the time it takes to do the work, but the time it takes to be to do the work well.  Just like we don't pay our Dentist by time, we pay him by his ability to do his work well, regardless of the actual time taken. Often in the dentist case, the shorter the time, the better it is and the higher is his fee.

Here's what you should answer to this question - "More than what you think!"

In our coaching and training business, we always work toward the goal of giving our clients more than their money's worth. Because we know that when we dedicate ourselves to raising the top (quality) rather than lowering the bottom (cost), everybody wins.

Money is worth and worth is measured in money. So don't charge less, because when you charge less, you're not giving more. Instead of lowering your fees, give more.  There are easily 5 ways that anyone can give more:

  1. More Heart, don't just do a job, put all your heart and soul into it, like a craftsman;
  2. More Kindness, be kind not just to others, but also to yourself and the job;
  3. More Depth, like going into the insider story that few knows;
  4. More Innovation and Creativity, as there are countless of ways to perform a service;
  5. More Thought into the job, and you will end up delivering very thoughtful pieces that people will talk about in centuries. 
If you find it difficult to do the 5-More as above, you can also do the following 5-Extras:
  1. Extra Pre-Sale Service
  2. Extra After-Sale Service
  3. Extra Opening Hours
  4. Extra Quantity (this is not a price reduction but a quality enhancement)
  5. Extra 'ommph'
One final comment about money. Money, being a medium of exchange, is neutral. Like any tool, it can serve the highest and the lowest. Money doesn't make a person good or bad, it simply amplifies whoever and whatever you are.

I learnt this very powerful 5-word phrase from Singapore's highest ever box-office movie ever: "Ah Boys to Men II". In one scene, the recruits were about to start their 3-day field camp.  Their Officer-in-Command asked them, "Before we moved out, anybody not feeling well?"  All the soldiers replied loudly, "No Sir!!!"
